News Letter 2005

October 11, 2005

To all our 2005 Bear Hunters:

Success Rate 91% on our 20th year of operation!

No doubt a most successful season for large bears and plenty of them. A 500, 450 and 400 lb. bears, also 7 bears over 300 lbs. and 17 bears between 200 and 300 lbs.

Where do they keep coming from? More than likely from the Pukaskwa National Park to the west and the Chapleau Game Preserve to the east. We are fortunate to be located between these two very large parks.

The success rate out of 64 hunters is as follows:

  • 48 hunters harvested bears and 10 fired at bears,
  • 37 boars and 11 sows were harvested,
  • 31 gun hunters harvested 25 bears,
  • 33 bow hunters harvested 23 bears,
  • 8 bow hunters fired at bears,
  • 2 gun hunters fired at bears.

The Statistical Sheet will let you figure all of the above.

Now for a few highlights:

-Jack White is no doubt the top man of the 2005 fall hunt. Jack harvested a 500 lb. boar on the first night of his hunt. Using his bow he placed the arrow such that he hit both lungs and the heart. The bear dropped 4 feet from the bait. Congratulations Jack, you are a top bow hunter!

-Todd Taylor looked like he was going home without a bear for the second year, but on the last night of his hunt and on a set that had been hunted by his buddy he shot a 450 lb. boar which dropped very close to his bait. Another vital organ shot and a quick death. Good Job #2!

-Rick White harvested a 400 lb. boar on the third night of his hunt and again like his father Jack, the bear actually moved backwards and died 15 feet from the stand. Another larger bear came and ate the bait and would not leave until the truck arrived to pick him up. Call him for a most interesting hunt. Congratulations again Rick!

-Dan Draeger harvested a 343 lb. boar and, Brian Snoeyink harvested a 335 lb. boar. They both hunted with the Jack Klapmust party and no doubt classified as .Top Rookies of the 2005 fall bear hunt.. Jack.s Party went 13 for 17.

-Dave Robinson, another rookie, not by age, but by bear hunting experience, harvested a 330 lb. boar. He hunted with the Andris party. They went 3 for 3.

-Ben Fern with the Tom Holtgrefe party went home with a 325 lb. boar. Tom.s party, (all bow hunters) harvested 8 bears out of 9 hunters. The bears were all boars and Tom harvested the only cinnamon of the season.

-Bobby Spain with the Hollis Miles party harvested a 315 lb. boar. Bobby has been hunting for at least 4 years and was the only hunter in that party who had not harvested a bear. I was told by Hollis to tie one up for Bobby, but he did it all by himself. They went 4 for 4.

-Bill Pickens also harvested a 300 lb. boar. He hunted with the John Dreves party and they went home with 5 bears out of 7 hunters.

I know that I am leaving out many more interesting comments but I only have so much paper.

I will hopefully put the 3 big bears on my advertising brochure but my photo gallery on my website should reflect most pictures which you sent.

What happens next year?

My buyers are not coming with any cash, so I am already filling the freezers and will decide as time goes on if I reduce my number of hunters and operate on my own or I go bigger and hire guides.

If you plan on a fall hunt for 2006, please call me early so I can decide accordingly. I already have 3 parties who have booked. My rate will remain the same as this year.

Good Luck in your future hunts!
