To
Our Fall 2003 Bear Hunters: October 3, 2003
What
a fall hunt!!! Big, big bears!!!
Success
rate 81% with 4 bears over 400 lbs., 8 bears over 300 lbs.
and 8 bears over 200 lbs. There were also 8 hunters who
saw big bears but could not harvest these bears for a number
of reasons: (bear did not come within bow range, saw hunter
and left or bear fired at and could not find). Remember,
we now have a new scale, maximum 440 lbs., so no more guesstimates
(estimates).
Why
are we still harvesting so many large bears after being
in business for 18 years? The only reason I may suggest
is that my bear grounds are bordered on the west by the
Pukaskwa National Park and on the east by the Chapleau Game
Preserve and since the timber company harvests the trees,
new growth and proper baiting entices these large bears,
who require a lot of food, to leave the old growth forests
in the parks.
The
statistical sheet is almost self-explanatory. The only difference
is that the size of each party is a blocked area and for
some parties the organizer who did not hunt is shown at
the top of the blocked area.
Now
for a few highlights:
-Rick
Kalinowski with the Dale Byce party was our 1st hunter and
on the first night of his hunt he harvested a 300 lb. Boar.
-Jack Klapmust with his son Mike organized a party of eight
hunters and went home with 5 bears. Joel Hofstra had a 410
lb. boar and Jason Workman harvested a 350 lb. boar. Joel
has the honour of getting the 2nd largest bear of the season.
-Mark Kent harvested a 450 lb. boar using his bow and is
no doubt the “man of the big bear season”. I
believe he is still on “cloud 9” and is explaining
to Gary, Ron and Wally Decker how to do it. Congratulations
Mark, you definitely will be in the record book for “Pope
and Young”.
-Dave
Rosemeyer and Brian White each harvested 400 lb. bears.
They hunted with the Ron Enderle party who went 4 for 5.
These bears are 3rd and 4th largest of the season.
-The
Randy Dalton party included Bill Dumford and his sweetheart
Theresa Verdon. Remember Bill is the one last year who harvested
a 500 lb. boar. Well, he still has the horseshoe in the
right location, because on the 5th night of his hunt he
harvested a 360 lb. boar and his lady Theresa who sat on
a set one mile away harvested a 310 lb. boar on the same
night.
Theresa
Verdon and Diane Owen were our only ladies and Diane hunted
hard for 7 days but the big bear she saw on the 4th night
did not give her a shot nor did he come back. Congratulations
Theresa and, next year Diane.
The
Mike Gorrell party went 4 for 6 and Bob Hoce who had a 400
lb. cinnamon, last year did it again. This time a 375 lb.
boar. Mike Creel’s bear is right up there with the
heavyweights, a 375 lb. boar using his bow. When Mike found
his bear the next morning, it had a large section eaten
out by either wolves or a larger bear. Call Mike Creel for
more information.
Want
more info on wolves howling and eating on bear parts, call
Jack Klapmust or the Scott Grieshop party.
Well
another great season and I have already started picking
up bait for next fall. We more than likely will not have
a spring bear hunt since the provincial elections occurred
yesterday and the Liberal party who won a majority vote
were not advocating a spring bear hunt.
I
have already received deposits from 4 parties for the fall
of 2004 and I do not plan in taking more hunters than this
last fall. So if you have previously hunted with me and
are interested in next fall’s hunt you should at least
call me and explain tentatively the number of hunters. I
do not require deposits at this time but I will at least
call you, when my deposits come close to 65 hunters. My
rate will remain the same for next year.
On
behalf of James and I, may all your other hunts be most
successful.
Sincerely,
Mike
I
will send an advertising brochure to some of my hunters
and I will add pictures on my photo gallery on my website:
