To All Our Fall 2002 Bear Hunters!
A very successful and exciting fall bear hunt is over with
a success rate of 88%! This involved 41 hunters who harvested
29 bears and 7 bears who were "fired at". We harvested
21 boars and 8 sows.
As you may note on the Statistical Sheet, I have added a new
column regarding the weight of the bear. You will also note
that only 3 hunters did not see a bear and out of these three,
Larry Day harvested a wolf on the 2nd day and therefore quit
hunting.
The following hunters saw big bears but were not able to fire
or draw before the bear took off. Peter Anderson, Rob Wurzl,
Brandon Draxten, Randy Dalton, Ricky Dalton, Eric Fickbohm,
Harry Woodruff, Carl Johnson and Dale Byce; that is 9 hunters
who saw big bears but did not capitalize. Call them for their
side of the story.
Well, no doubt, the largest bear was harvested by William Dumford,
a 500 lb. boar on the 2nd night of his hunt. This was his first
bear hunt. What do you do now for an encore, Bill? CONGRATULATIONS!
The 2nd largest was a 400 lb. cinnamon harvested by Robert Hoce,
using his bow. Our largest cinnamon in the 16 years we have
been in business was 350 lb. about 5 years ago.
Paul Woodruff has the honour of having the 3rd largest bear,
a 350 lb. boar. Remember, from previous years, Paul 74, his
brother Harry 77 travel from Delaware and Vermont with their
muscle man Carl Johnson. Carl harvested a 300 lb. boar on the
1st night of his hunt and kept struggling all evening to drag
this bear at least 1000 ft. to his truck. We need another guide,
so Carl should apply.
Justin Kincer, the youngest hunter, did not waste time getting
his 325 lb. boar using a bow. He ended his hunt on the 2nd night
while Rick Knueven saw 6 bears and harvested on the 5th night.
Gary Henderson also got a 300 lb. boar on the 1st night of his
hunt. He hunted with the Earl Gossett party and they went 4
for 4.
Jeff Perry also harvested a 300 lb. boar on his 1st night using
his bow. Are you ready for your elk this fall Jeff?
The Charlie Coleman and Rosemary Thompson party spent a few
extra days hunting. Eric and Lee had the opportunity to harvest
bears but could not capitalize. Rosemary sat for 11 days and
finally went home with a bear. Not the same results as last
year, right Rosemary? Charlie, the pro bear hunter, sat on the
same set for 6 days and it certainly paid off.
Last, but not least, came the Dale Byce party. They went 5
for 5 and Pat and Scott had the largest bears of the group.
Well the Statistical Sheet is self explanatory. Parties are
separated by a line and they are listed from arrival August
15th to the end of the hunt September 20th.
I want to remind hunters that my rate will increase by $50.00
U.S. to $800.00 next year. I will also require a deposit of
$200.00 U.S. at least 2 months before the hunt. You need to
understand that I bait for 1 ½ months before your arrival
and that all my expenses occur before you arrive, such as picking
up doughnuts, meat and gravy all winter and having to freeze
all this for part of the summer, also repairs on the trucks
and labour in brushing roads, etc.
New Policy: I will start baiting as usual, but if your deposit
arrives only 1 week before your hunt, I will only bait 1 week
prior to your arrival. This fall I had many cancellations at
the very last minute without a deposit.
Hoping all your future hunts are successful!
Mike
